Lyrical

Lyrical

Brief History

Lyrical dance is a style that combines elements of ballet, modern, jazz, and tap techniques. The name lyrical comes from the word "lyrics" and dancers often use the lyrics of a song or music to inspire them to do certain movements or show expression. Besides emotional connection to music, lyrical dance typically encourages use of articulation, line, weight, and movement qualities.

While lyrical dance focuses on genuine dance techniques, the style itself has no established technique or history. Possibly beginning in the late 1970s or early 1980s, lyrical is a style generated by dance teachers and was most likely developed as enhanced entertainment for judges at local and regional dance competitions.

Examinations & Medal Tests

The Academy offers a series of Examinations which are held by United Teachers of Dance who are Members of Council for Dance and Education Training (UK). They begin at children's primary grades 1 & 2 through to professional teaching qualifications. Medal Tests are also held, where solo or group numbers can be danced. Medals start at Bronze - right through to Medallion.
